Chinchillas are bred in the intense battery cage system. This means the animals have no possibility to express their natural behaviours, such as running or jumping, which causes severe welfare problems.
To preserve the pelts, chinchillas are killed by head-to-tail or water electrocution, neck breaking and gassing. Often chinchillas are still conscious during the process of electrocution, which can last 10 to 30 seconds.
Chinchillas are bred commercially for their fur in several regions of Europe (i.e. Poland, Denmark, Hungary) and in South-America (Brazil and Argentina).
