Approximately 320 million rabbits are bred in the European Union. Most of them are bred for meat, but some are also used in laboratories, rarely for display purposes. Rabbits are kept in battery cages, which makes it impossible for them to hop, move around freely, dig or hide. Females are mostly used for reproduction.

Rabbits can live up to 15 years but when they are bred for meat, the majority of them die at the age of only 3 months.
